I'm sure we've all gotten this e-mail: but will it work and why?

Don't pump gas on May 15th

%26gt; ...in April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest

%26gt; Of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.

%26gt;

%26gt; On May 15th 2007, we ask that all internet members not go to a gas station

%26gt; in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in a lot of

%26gt; places.

%26gt;

%26gt; There are 9,000,000+ American members currently on all of the internet

%26gt; networks, and the average car takes about 30 to 40 dollars to fill up.

%26gt;

%26gt; If all internet user members did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would

%26gt; Take $2,700,000,000.00 (that's BILLION) out of the oil companies pockets for

%26gt; Just one day,

%26gt;

%26gt; So please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a

%26gt; dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.

%26gt;

%26gt; If you agree (which I cant see why you wouldn't) repost this bulletin

%26gt; with 芒鈧揇on't pump gas on May 15th芒鈧?br>I'm sure we've all gotten this e-mail: but will it work and why?

I am doing it on that day and I have also told everyone that I know.

Unless you are planning on also not driving anywhere, it doesn't make a difference. It's your consumption that matters, not what day you pump it. No one is looking at the daily numbers, more like monthly/quarterly so it would all come out in the wash by the time the financial statements were prepared.

We are having the same problem here in Canada. Our gas prices are currently $1.13 a litre. That makes it almost $5.00 a gallon. I would like to think that a boycott on gasoline usage would send a message, but I don't think it will. It is only a band aid solution. People have already curtailed the use of their vehicles and gone carpooling, using buses and the like. Big trucks will still do their long hauls and people still have to go to work.

They have us by the short and curlies, I am afraid.

Unless May 15th is some magic date and all the oil company's financial statements are prepared around that date then it won't make any difference. A better email would urge people to take the bus or ride their bike to work on May 15th instead That would actually reduce consumption for a day. Of course it would be really nice to keep that up for a longer period of time like a week/month/year. Otherwise it's not going to make much of a difference.

Basic economics principles so it would work. Here is the problem. If not everyone participates it will not work. In a free market people will still go get gas. This is basic game theory, if you get everyone to do this it will work but people still need gas and in order to make it stick you have to have cooperation and that is just not feasible!

Yes! I am going to honor the gas-out on May 15th.

There should be a don't use Gas on May 15th. Or walk or ride bicycle only day. Then that might make a difference.

Don't buy anything on the 15th.

Why yap when you could bite.

I'm sure we've all gotten this e-mail: but will it work and why?

It will just cause more buying the day before, or the day after. We should boycott 1 company forever. This would cause them to either lower their price, or go out of business.
