What is it that looks extremely unprofessional about this drawing?

just a note, i drew this within 5 minutes for the sole purpose of putting into photoshop and attempting to color it.

i realize i missed a few spots in the hair,

and i forgot to color in the eyes,

[which in the end doesnt matter much.]

but what else about this;

[the email and myspace over it not counting, because i posted it in a bulletin, and knowing how original most people on myspace are, i prefered not to end up finding this somewhere else.]

what could help me improve?

and dont just make suggestions either, tell me how to actually do what youre suggesting.

It's not really bad at all, just needs a few tweaks. Most notably, the posture is off. The line of balance that runs through the body's weight should be on a vertical. Observe how people stand. Your linework should be smoother: try inking with a #5 red sable watercolor brush before you put it into Photoshop. Vary the line thickness(this takes practice, but it's fun).

The eyes look a bit weird. The left eye (the eye on the right) looks like it's looking straight ahead, while the other eye looks like it's looking a bit sideways.

The arms could have been a bit longer to make the hands slip comfortably into the pockets.

Other than that, I think it's quite good!

You spent all that time and effort and all you could think of was to have her stand there with her hands in her pockets

Cartoons are like icing on the cake, so don't just dabble at the idea of being a cartoonist. Make us believe you are a cartoonist and have the cartoon carry the message

Well, if i'm to assume that the pose and character are whats understood to be nessesary and the pictures professionalism is reliant on other factors. Then i would say its the unsteady ink outline and the volume of ink around the character that would make me flag the picture. Too much ink makes the object look flat while the unsteady line makes it look jagged.

I think its the lineart...try for thinner lines, and vary the thicknesses...i'll try to find you a link to some decent lineart...brb
